To check your Windows operating system version, do as follows:
- Click the Start button.
- Select Control Panel.
- Select the Performance and Maintenance category.
Note: This step might not be necessary in all computers. - Double-click System. The System Properties window opens.
On the General tab, you can see the version of your Windows operating system:
There are several ways to determine whether your computer is running a 32-bit or a 64-bit version of Windows XP.
Use My Computer to check System Properties
- Click Start, then My Computer and finally right-click your mouse and select Properties. The System Properties window is displayed:
- In the System Properties window, click the General tab and note the first line under Computer:
- On 32-bit systems, a value other than Itanium or Itanium2 appears on the line.
- On 64-bit systems, Itanium or Itanium 2 appears on the line.

Use the Winmsd.exe tool to check System Type or Processor
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- Type winmsd.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.
- Do either Step 4 or Step 5.
- Locate System Type in the right pane under Item. Note the value.
- If the value that corresponds to System Type is X86-based PC, the computer is running a 32-bit version of the Windows operating system.
- If the value that corresponds to System Type is Itanium–based system, the computer is running a 64-bit version of the Windows operating system.
- Locate Processor in the right pane under Item. Note the value.
- If the value that corresponds to Processor starts with x86; then the computer is running a 32-bit version of the Windows operating system.
- If the value that corresponds to Processor starts with ia64; then the computer is running a 64-bit version of the Windows operating system.
Use the Dxdiag tool to check the version
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- Type dxdiag in the Open box, and then click OK.
Note: If a Windows dialog box is displayed asking if you want to verify your drivers, you can safely click No and continue. DirectX Diagnostic Tool dialog will be displayed. Allow the program to finish loading. - Locate Operating System in System Information: If your computer is running a 64-bit version of Windows XP, it will be indicated on the operating system line. An example: Microsoft Windows XP 64-bit Edition.
- Locate Processor in System Information: If the processor used is either Itanium or Itanium2, your computer is running a 64-bit version of Windows XP.
During the installation, Setup Wizard automatically removes any conflicting security software, such as other antivirus and firewall programs from your computer. If Setup Wizard finds software that cannot be removed, it asks you to remove the software manually through Windows Control Panel:
- Click Start.
- Select Control Panel.
- Double-click Add or Remove Programs. A list of applications installed on your computer is shown.
- Select the application to remove and click Remove.
The antivirus programs may have several related components. Repeat this step to uninstall all. (Related components have the same product name.) - Restart your computer.
- Double-click My Computer.
- Select Local Disk (C:).
- Select Program Files. The Program Files folder contains program folders of the applications installed on your computer.
- Depending on Windows settings, the contents of the Program Files folder may not be displayed automatically. In that case, click Show the contents of this folder.
- Remove the unnecessary program folders.
If some program folders contain files that Windows was not able to remove, the problem may persist. To delete these files:
You can now start the F-Secure Internet Security 2009 installation again.
