Most people are familiar with freeware, shareware, cookies, media players, interactive content, and file sharing. What they may not realize is that some of the aforementioned may contain code or components that allow the developers of these applications and tools to actually collect and disseminate information about those using them. F-Secure Anti-Spyware protects your privacy and removes these data tracking components from your personal computer.

1. Does F-Secure Internet Security work with other antivirus or firewall software installed on my computer?
No. You cannot have two antivirus products from different vendors installed on your computer. The F-Secure Internet Security 2009 product automatically detects and removes your old antivirus and firewall products during the installation. You can also manually remove any other antivirus or firewall products before installing the product.
2. Is F-Secure Internet Security 2009 compatible with Windows XP SP2 or SP3 Security Center and the internal firewall of the operating system?
Yes, it is compatible. However, you cannot use two software firewalls on the same computer simultaneously. When you install the product, the internal firewall of Windows XP is automatically turned off.
3. Which version of the Windows operating system do I have?

To check your Windows operating system version, do as follows:

  1. Click the Start button.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Select the Performance and Maintenance category.
Note: This step might not be necessary in all computers.
  4. Double-click System. The System Properties window opens.

On the General tab, you can see the version of your Windows operating system:

How to check OS

4. Which operating systems does the product support?
F-Secure Internet Security 2009 currently supports the following operating systems: Win 2000, Windows XP SP2 and SP3 and Windows Vista and Vista SP1 (both 32-bit and 64-bit). However, the product does not support the server versions of the above operating systems mentioned above, nor Windows XP 64-bit.
5. Is F-Secure Internet Security available for Apple Macintosh?
No. F-Secure Internet Security 2009 is only available for Microsoft Windows (workstation) operating systems.
6. Are two antivirus programs better than one?
No. It is best to have one good antivirus program. An antivirus program needs to open a file to scan it for malware. If another antivirus program is trying to open the same file at the same time, it has to wait for the file to become free. This may cause problems. For example, programs may not start correctly, or the whole system crashes.
7. How do I determine whether my computer is running a 32-bit or a 64-bit version of Windows XP?

There are several ways to determine whether your computer is running a 32-bit or a 64-bit version of Windows XP.

Use My Computer to check System Properties

  1. Click Start, then My Computer and finally right-click your mouse and select Properties. The System Properties window is displayed:
  2. In the System Properties window, click the General tab and note the first line under Computer:
    • On 32-bit systems, a value other than Itanium or Itanium2 appears on the line.
    • On 64-bit systems, Itanium or Itanium 2 appears on the line.

Use the Winmsd.exe tool to check System Type or Processor
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type winmsd.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.
  3. Do either Step 4 or Step 5.
  4. Locate System Type in the right pane under Item. Note the value.
    • If the value that corresponds to System Type is X86-based PC, the computer is running a 32-bit version of the Windows operating system.
    • If the value that corresponds to System Type is Itanium–based system, the computer is running a 64-bit version of the Windows operating system.
  5. Locate Processor in the right pane under Item. Note the value.
    • If the value that corresponds to Processor starts with x86; then the computer is running a 32-bit version of the Windows operating system.
    • If the value that corresponds to Processor starts with ia64; then the computer is running a 64-bit version of the Windows operating system.

Use the Dxdiag tool to check the version
  1. Click Start, and then click Run.
  2. Type dxdiag in the Open box, and then click OK.
Note: If a Windows dialog box is displayed asking if you want to verify your drivers, you can safely click No and continue. DirectX Diagnostic Tool dialog will be displayed. Allow the program to finish loading.
  3. Locate Operating System in System Information: If your computer is running a 64-bit version of Windows XP, it will be indicated on the operating system line. An example: Microsoft Windows XP 64-bit Edition.
  4. Locate Processor in System Information: If the processor used is either Itanium or Itanium2, your computer is running a 64-bit version of Windows XP.
8. How do I remove conflicting software manually?

During the installation, Setup Wizard automatically removes any conflicting security software, such as other antivirus and firewall programs from your computer. If Setup Wizard finds software that cannot be removed, it asks you to remove the software manually through Windows Control Panel:

  1. Click Start.
  2. Select Control Panel.
  3. Double-click Add or Remove Programs. A list of applications installed on your computer is shown.
  4. Select the application to remove and click Remove.
The antivirus programs may have several related components. Repeat this step to uninstall all. (Related components have the same product name.)
  5. Restart your computer.
  6. If some program folders contain files that Windows was not able to remove, the problem may persist. To delete these files:

  7. Double-click My Computer.
  8. Select Local Disk (C:).
  9. Select Program Files. The Program Files folder contains program folders of the applications installed on your computer.
  10. Depending on Windows settings, the contents of the Program Files folder may not be displayed automatically. In that case, click Show the contents of this folder.
  11. Remove the unnecessary program folders.

You can now start the F-Secure Internet Security 2009 installation again.
