Activision announced today the long-standing Call of Duty series has surpassed $3 billion in retail sales worldwide, making it one of the biggest gaming franchises ever.

"Call Of Duty has become one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time," said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, Inc. "If you consider the number of hours our audiences are engaged in playing Call of Duty games, it is likely to be one of the most viewed of all entertainment experiences in modern history."

Since the first release of the original Call of Duty, the franchise has sold over 55 million units worldwide. The latest, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, went on to generate over $500 million in sales in its first week. Courtesy of IGN

The Wildcat recruiting class has added another three-star standout as Milan (Tn.) linebacker Avery Williamson has committed to UK. The 6-foot-2, 220 pounder is a part of a storied high school program that was runner-up in last year’s 3A state championship. The commitment was confirmed by Avery late Wednesday evening with a simple message, “I’m currently committed to Kentucky.” We hope to have a more in-depth interview later Thursday, with more quotes. Huge get for the ‘Cats, as UK linebackers coach Chuck Smith has been waiting for this verbal for more then five months (offered in June after camp). UK loses three linebackers to graduation, including All-SEC contenders Micah Johnson and Sam Maxwell. Williamson is the third Tennessee player to commit this year, joining Alcoa’s Tyler Robinson and Oakland’s Tim McAdoo. UK has signed 6 players from the Volunteer state in the previous two recruiting classes.

Activision has passed along some more impressive Modern Warfare 2 numbers, cementing the fact that, yes, this game sold really, really well.

According to its internal estimated sales numbers, the title grossed approximately $550 million dollars in its first week, setting new five-day sell-through records.

First, let's take a look at the Xbox Live numbers (Note: Sony did not provide PSN numbers in Activision's release):
•More than 5.2 million multiplayer hours were logged playing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the first day alone.
•More than 2.2 million unique gamers played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in one day on November 10th. A new one-day record for Xbox LIVE.
•More than 11 million achievements were unlocked on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 on the first day.
